Here at Arizona Arts Academy Gila Valley, our mission is to accept a child where they are at in their educational journey. We provide a healthy environment to allow them to become lovers of lifelong learning by nurturing that innate desire, and in turn, become trailblazers by blazing a path for others to find this in themselves.
We do this by taking a classical/Montessori approach to education which places the child, rather than the teacher, at the forefront of the educational experience. It is a comprehensive mastery-based approach where teachers are guides/tutors/facilitators. Lectures are brief and infrequent. Most learning happens independently, or in one-on-one and small group sessions with lots of hands-on exploration experiences. While core subjects are the focus of daily learning, enriching electives focused on the arts are embedded throughout the day. This unique environment gives our students the chance to explore and cultivate their talents both academically and artistically.
Currently, we start each day with a devotional for all students. K-8 have core classes in the morning and Art classes after lunch. High School students work throughout the day on their core classes while taking electives as needed and offered.
Currently, we offer Art, Choir, General Music, Band, Orchestra, Drama Appreciation, and American Sign Language. Other electives include typing, PE, language online, coding, and Newspaper/Yearbook. On Fridays we have Culinary, Cheer, Clogging, Cool Cards Club and a Trades class. (Fridays are optional. School is Monday-Thursday) We are working towards Spanish, Culinary and Dance daily, and more as we continue to grow.
Each morning we begin with a devotional which includes the pledge and a quick mini lesson by our school counselor on mental and emotional health in a fun, interactive way. We believe these are important in the learning process as well. Then, we end with prayer and disperse to our separate classes.
We do not use Common Core or other popular public school curriculum. In grades K-8, teachers and administration work together to come up with material that reflects our Classical/Montessori & Conservative/Faith-based worldview approach where students learn at their individual pace, with textbooks, hands on manipulatives and even computers to help the learning process. Ages and grades are grouped together to make this possible and help the students work at their own pace, whether slower or faster than their peers. Middle School can be a hybrid between live and online classes. High School is solely online for their core classes. The online options include taking College or online private schools classes. We do not give homework, but High Schoolers and Middle Schoolers who do online classes may need to do work outside of class time. Also, there may occasionally be projects that the kids can work on at home or prepare to share in class. As a private school, we do not have state testing and we do not teach to a test.
Tuition is $10,000 a year per student. ESA funds cover an average of about $7000 of that. Each child qualifies differently, so we cannot give an exact amount. Arts fees are not included. There are scholarships available to help cover the difference.
Universal ESA (Empowerment Scholarship Account) is a new Arizona State government program that gives parents financial help to pay for a school of their choice.
Scholarships are available to any family who can't afford the tuition, even with the ESA funds. Parents can volunteer talents or a set amount of hours per week in exchange for the remainder of the tuition in exchange for a scholarship. Some examples of ways you can volunteer include teacher aids, tutoring, teaching a specific arts class, coming on weekends to clean or maintain property, handyman services, leading or joining our PTSO, or Activity Coordinator (parties, field trips...etc.) *Be aware, most of these will require an IVP fingerprint card if working directly with students. The parent is responsible for acquiring the card.
